Olga Thomas’s @drolgathomas music is a testament to history, blending tradition, emotion, and artistry into cinematic compositions that resonate worldwide. Born in Moscow into a family of prolific musicians and inventors, her journey began at the renowned Gnessin School, where her mother—a musician and costume designer—was her first inspiration. Olga’s talents flourished under the mentorship of Edison Denisov at the Moscow Tchaikovsky Conservatoire, where she was encouraged to embrace her individuality.
Described as cinematic and emotive, Olga’s works have touched stages, palaces, and hearts alike. From honoring the British Royal Family to collaborating with cultural icons, her music is a timeless celebration of life and legacy. In this exclusive interview, Olga shares the inspirations and journey behind her remarkable career
– Olga, your music has been described as timeless and deeply emotive. Can you share what first inspired you to become a composer and how your journey began?
– I believe I was destined to be a composer. From my earliest memories, I was either creating my own compositions or reimagining melodies that I felt could use some improvement. I could vividly hear arrangements in my mind that often diverged from what other composers chose. This constant internal dialogue is like an application perpetually running in the background of my thoughts — I find a musical response instinctively tied to every experience I encounter.
– You’ve had the extraordinary honor of composing music to commemorate significant moments for the British Royal Family. How did it feel to have your works recognized by them?
– I’ve always held deep admiration for the British Royal Family. Meeting Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, an extraordinary woman, was a moment I’ll cherish forever. Composing numerous pieces to celebrate pivotal milestones in the Royal Family’s history has been an immense honor—something I never imagined I would achieve as a child.
My compositions have marked the lives of remarkable royals such as the Queen Mother and Queen Elizabeth II, along with celebrating joyous occasions like weddings, anniversaries, births, and, notably, the coronation of King Charles III. Each piece is my heartfelt tribute to their legacy.
– The single Her Platinum Crown was a tribute to Her Majesty The Queen, with proceeds going to Cruse Bereavement Support. Can you tell us more about the story and emotions behind this composition?
– The loss of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II was profoundly challenging for me to process. Despite knowing it was inevitable, it felt as though a vital part of my identity had been snatched away. Her unwavering presence provided a sense of security and stability throughout my life. Following her passing, it felt as though the ground beneath us was shifting irreparably.
Composing Her Platinum Crown became an essential part of my grieving process. Music possesses a unique healing quality, and sharing this piece with the world allowed us to unite in our collective sorrow. It served as both a tribute and a balm during a time of great loss.
– You have worked with incredible artists and cultural institutions such as the BBC and RADA. Which collaborations have left the most lasting impact on you, and why?
– One of my most memorable collaborations was with the talented actress Susannah York on The Cherry Orchard. As a lifelong admirer of her work, collaborating with her was a thrilling experience, and I’m proud to say that she became a dear friend. After her passing, it was truly an honor when her family requested me to compose and perform a piece in her memory.
My career has been a blessing, allowing me to work with an array of phenomenal talents, including Bill Nighy, Juliet Stevenson, Jemma Redgrave, Corin Redgrave, Kirk Douglas, and Peter Falk, along with musicians like Joanna Forest, Daniel Koek, Wynne Evans, Lesley Garrett, and the wonderful London Community Gospel Choir. I consider myself incredibly fortunate.
Composing for the Royal Family is not just a duty; it is a deeply personal honor that reflects my lifelong admiration.
•Your childhood in Moscow and your education at the Tchaikovsky Conservatoire must have shaped your unique style. What elements from that time continue to influence your music today?
– During my childhood, I kept my ability to compose hidden from others, fearing that external opinions would diminish its purity. As a result, it remained my best-kept secret for a long time. When I attended the Tchaikovsky Conservatoire, I had the privilege of studying under the remarkable composer Edison Denisov. Rather than impose traditional techniques, he encouraged me to stay true to my natural talent and unique style, which profoundly impacted my confidence.
While my formal education provided a solid foundation in musical theory and technique, my innate creativity remains untouched — just as raw and authentic as it was in the beginning. This blend of training and raw artistry is fundamental to my ongoing journey as a composer.
– Where do you find your creative inspiration, especially when crafting works meant to honor royalty or significant historical moments?
– My creative inspiration comes from a myriad of sources that surround me — from nature and people to art and literature. However, my deep affection for the Royal Family and my emotional connection to their significant milestones greatly influence my royal compositions. These moments, such as anniversaries, weddings, and births, ignite my creative spark, allowing me to craft music that mirrors the emotions of the event: a regal lullaby for a royal birth, a sweeping romantic piece for a marriage or anniversary, and a powerful state composition for the coronation of our new monarch.
– As we approach the winter holidays, how do you personally plan to celebrate? Could you share a heartfelt wish for our readers this season?
– I plan to celebrate Christmas surrounded by my loved ones, reflecting on the blessings of the past year and taking a well-deserved break after a busy 2024.
As for a wish for your readers, I return to a transformative piece of advice from my former music professor: the importance of staying true to oneself. Regardless of how you choose to celebrate this holiday season — whether it’s Christmas or another occasion — I hope you embrace your individuality and remain authentic to who you are.
