Filmmakers from around the world gathered at AMC Empire 25 in Times Square as the Follow Your Heart Film Festival concluded its 2026 New York edition with a celebration of independent cinema, international collaboration, and the enduring power of storytelling.
The festival has continued to expand its international reach. This year, Follow Your Heart received 2,988 submissions from filmmakers representing more than 90 countries and international co-productions across six continents. Following a rigorous review process conducted by an international jury, only 70 projects advanced to the finalist round.

The awards ceremony opened with the official anthem of the Follow Your Heart Film Festival, performed by vocalist Veronika Znamenskaya and pianist Ilya Ishchenko. Their performance set the tone for an evening dedicated to creativity, artistic achievement, and cultural exchange.
Festival Founder and Director Oxana Nechaeva welcomed guests alongside Festival Producer Ava Golban, expressing gratitude to filmmakers, jury members, volunteers, partners, and supporters whose contributions made the event possible.
A New York Edition With Global Reach
One of the highlights of the festival was the presentation of Unknown Vysotsky: A Truthful Story by filmmaker Anatoliy Balchev, who attended as a special guest. The documentary, dedicated to legendary Soviet poet, actor, and musician Vladimir Vysotsky, was showcased to New York audiences shortly after its appearance at the Cannes Film Festival. Balchev’s work is also connected to Apollo Film Production, whose portfolio includes feature films and documentaries. The New York screening received a warm response from attendees.
The festival also introduced new opportunities for independent filmmakers through its collaboration with VUGA Foundation and VUGA TV. Participants viewed a special presentation highlighting international distribution opportunities, audience development initiatives, and new pathways for independent projects to reach global audiences beyond the traditional festival circuit.
That distribution conversation connects naturally with Gossip Stone’s recent coverage of culture and live-event media, including Planet Fashion TV’s Miami Swim Week showcase, where runway, performance, and media visibility worked together as one cultural package.

First Best Feature Film Award
A major milestone for the 2026 edition was the introduction of the festival’s first-ever Best Feature Film category, reflecting the growing number of feature-length submissions and the festival’s expanding international profile.
The inaugural Best Feature Film Award was presented to Qazhymuqan from Kazakhstan, directed by Kanagat Mustafin. Inspired by the life of legendary Kazakh wrestler Qazhymuqan Munaitpasov, the film exemplified the strong international presence that defined this year’s program.
Special recognition was also given to the festival’s international jury, whose members dedicated months to reviewing and evaluating submissions from around the world. The 2026 jury included Oxana Nechaeva, Ava Golban, Oleksandr Gorbatyi, Vladimir Borisov, Henry Lipatov, Inna Bagryantseva, Ihor Shovkoplias, Natalia Nagornaya, and Vitaliy Tovchucha.
The festival also welcomed distinguished returning guests and members of the Follow Your Heart Miami 2026 Jury: Stanislav Arshchenko, Iurii Mostan, Oleksandr Gorbatyi, and Ihor Shovkoplias. Their continued participation reflects the international community of filmmakers and industry professionals that has grown around the festival over the years.
DOM Cinema Arts Guild and the Independent Film Network
Follow Your Heart Film Festival continues its active collaboration with DOM Cinema Arts Guild, an international professional organization that brings together filmmakers, producers, actors, cinematographers, composers, designers, artists, and creative professionals from around the world.
Several distinguished members of the Guild also serve as jury members and advisors of the festival, including Sergey Mokritsky, Albert Rudnitsky, Oxana Nechaeva, Valentina Varnavskaya, and Ava Golban. Among the Guild members and festival participants recognized during the event were Mykhailo Salai and Elizaveta Eremenko, whose ongoing involvement reflects the organization’s growing international presence and commitment to supporting independent artists and creative professionals worldwide.
The festival’s international focus also fits the broader cultural lane Gossip Stone has been following this month, from cross-border educational arts programming at Sofia University to film, fashion, and media events that help independent creators reach audiences beyond their first market.

The Panel Returned to One Point: Story Still Wins
Following the awards ceremony, guests participated in an industry panel featuring casting director Adrienne Stern, stunt coordinator Roberto Lopez, and filmmaker Albert Rudnitsky. The discussion explored the future of theatrical exhibition, audience engagement, independent filmmaking, and the evolving role of short films in today’s entertainment landscape.
Although each panelist approached the topic from a different professional perspective, the discussion repeatedly returned to a common conclusion: technology, distribution platforms, and audience habits may continue to evolve, but compelling storytelling remains the foundation of successful filmmaking.
Panelists encouraged emerging filmmakers to focus on strong scripts, authentic creative vision, and stories they genuinely believe in. Rather than chasing trends or attempting to predict market demands, filmmakers were encouraged to create work driven by passion, sincerity, and a genuine desire to connect with audiences.
This message resonated strongly with the mission of the Follow Your Heart Film Festival itself. Whether discussing short films, independent productions, or feature-length releases, the consensus remained clear: stories created with conviction, honesty, and heart continue to find their audience.
